Saying “I do” at an offbeat celebration this year? You may want to say yes to one of these bold dresses that are perfect for Brides who cringe at the thought of a normal wedding dress.
If you are craving something alternative to go with your independent and forward striving personality (and who knows, you might just find the dress right here), look no further: we have gathered unexpected styles worthy of a one-of-a-kind wedding feté.
Who is the indie bride?
Indie Bride is a woman who loves art, philosophy and music, and might even choose to have a a ceremony at town’s modern art museum, an abandoned factory or opt for a City hall elopement.
She loves mixing vintage eclectic with modern minimalism, and will not mind being unique when it comes to her wedding style. She dares to be different, because she realized this is who she is.
Indie Bride is an unintentional trend setter, and would never even think about following conventional fashion. She is an understated heroine of the avantgarde scene.
So for her wedding day, any ol’ dress ain’t gonna cut it. She would however consider wearing a short dress, a two-piece or a jumpsuit, someone’s granma’s find from the attic and a leather jacket would go with it. She would rather buy a light colored dress at a fringe fashion house which isn’t even intended as Bridal, that shopping at a multinational wedding gown commercial brand.
It is sometimes difficult to tell the Indie Brides and boho Brides apart, but when you look at them closer you will discover that although they both stand out as different from traditional weddings, boho tend to be more nature-inspired and hippie-like, drawing from the 60s flower-power era, whilst indie is heavily influenced by the emo subculture of the 90s with a raw edginess to it.
With inspiration mainly from the alternative music, literature and art scene, Indie Bride does not worry about organza, diamonds or cake pops on display. Fierce, determined and ready to write her own wedding rule book, she is going to rock her own anti-bridal style at her wedding. She invokes raw beauty to emerge from the unpredictable, and inspire rock bands to to compose new lyrics.
These wedding dresses do not scream bridal, and can seldom found in the wedding dress superstore. You might find it in the summer dress section of Urban Outfitters, or at your local Oxfam.
In this kind of dress, you can enjoy the most important day of your life looking shockingly like yourself without being hidden by petticoats and dense layers of shiny fabrics.
Where does the hunt for a genuinely unique and stylish gown actually begin? If you live in a smallish town, your best bet might be to order online. Etsy and BHLDN are good places to start. Consider having the dress made by a local designer for a 100% unique and individualized look. You might even find a vintage gown at a market that could be adjusted to fit your unique requirements.
Modern wedding dress designers that have embraced and defined the indie Bridal fashion are bridal houses such as Alexandra Grecco, Halfpenny London, Self Portrait, Charlie Brear, Callahan, Samantha Pleet and Reformation.
Casual and Cool, Vintage-inspired but modern, most of all unique, one cannot help but to fall in love with these dresses. Scroll down to enjoy some of their best designs and more – and if you feel inspired, we invite you to share your thoughts with us.
