Here at Sheer we just adore fashion-forward gals that don’t seem to care much for trends or runways styles, but rather create their own looks using their personal preferences. Isn’t this kind of style intuition also perfect for a wedding day look which is all about personality, and less about tradition?
We wrote about Alicia Vikander a while ago which was (and continues to be) hugely popular – and Alexa Chung is another shining example of style icons which embody the same laid back and off-beat vibes resulting in instant glamor.
Alexa Chung first started being photographed in 2006 and immediately changed the way the world dressed. Forever the it-brit of fashion and media, she is known for her effortless sense of style that never looks like she tried too hard. Even whilst attending glamorous galas alongside the royals, her contagiously cool style choices continue to shine amongst the brightest of the stars.
There’s a reason she’s won the British Fashion Awards Style Icon Award three times: strong influences of 60’s and 70’s are evident in her wardrobe choices, and Alexa seamlessly captures the essence of London-chic.
We prepared this post for all alternative brides who love fashion-forward bride style inspiration, and you will hopefully find in our interpretation of these looks that the concept could work perfectly as wedding dresses (or bridesmaids) too!
The Sparkling champagne frock

Alexa wore this golden Marc Jacobs number at the 2010 Council of Fashion Designers of America CFDA Awards – and we can’t help wondering if this is also around the time the nude + sequin wedding dress idea started to develop in couture bridal designers mind. The long sleeves and modest neckline is capturing one of the biggest bridal trends in recent years – but clearly Alexa was years ahead!
Champagne colored dresses are ever so gorgeous and have become the grown up alternative to a blush wedding gown for brides ready to update the ivory or white bridal gown. It looks great underneath lace for a three dimensional effect, or as seen here with tonnes of glitter and/ or sequins. So glamorous and Alexa-cool!

In a perfectly “Meghan” dress, Alexa Chung attends the ‘Sleeping Beauty’ Premier at Cannes Film Festival 2011 – 7 years before the royal craze kicked in.
Whereas Meghans dress was a more fitted shape, Alexas style has an Aline/ Sheath silhouette. This classic wedding dress look became a sensation at Harry & Meghans wedding 2018.
Sleek, timeless and yet highly fashionable and feminine, this dress will continue to be an iconic look which simply flatters everyone – and never dates.

The High neck short sleeved 60s inspired gown

Alexa Chung presents an award at the 2014 L’Oreal Colour Trophy Awards wearing a metallic Bella Freud sheath. What we love especially about this look is the high neck which is bang on the money for 2019 bridal looks.
The short sleeves brings the look into a 1960s pop culture flair which is always a good idea if you are an indie bride.

It is not hard to see how this can be translated to a indie gals dream wedding dress with its vintage romantic yet understated style language. The loose fit and modest neck is Alexa’s signature look, as you have probably figured by now. We just love it.

Ms Chung wore a Lover dress at the Foundry launch party in Los Angeles 2011. The all French lace look is has been the preference of boho brides for the last 7 years and with its laid back yet elegant characteristics it is not hard to see why.
In this section we have also included a handful of lilac wedding dresses, as this is also a look you should be thinking of stealing!

At the Grammys 2013, Alexa showed her shoulders and arms in an refreshingly charming spaghetti strap A line tea dress by Valentino. The pattern appears to be little flowers but it is actually cut out with the stretch jersey peeking through from the layer below. The understated-ness of this look is what makes it a style statement – and wouldn’t you want the same for your walk down the aisle?

The plunging halter gown

At the Met gala in 2017, Alexa turned up in an elegant polka dot halter gown with a plunging neckline. 2017 is also the year when wedding dress necklines became more and more revealing – did Alexa spark the trend, possibly?
This style is great to show off your sculpted shoulders and décolletage; and another benefit of the V neckline is that it is super flattering for plus size brides as it halves the torso vertically, emphasizing the waist. More about slimming dress tricks here

The floral wedding frock

We looove bold brides that dare challenging the idea of a traditional white dress. For an adventurous look which is also super fun and girly, the colorful floral embroidery is just the right thing to be seen in.
Alexa wore this millennial pink satin ball gown (which absolutely could have been a wedding gown) the Golden Globe 2017 – coincidentally when floral wedding gowns was declared a trend. And it still going strong – just look at designers such as Hermione the Paula which embodies this look masterfully.

An creative look for the fashionista bride, these sleeve are part fairy tale and part cat walk and will give you instant modern belle of the ball vibes. If you crave an attention grabbing bridal outfit, this style will definitely do the trick.

Finale: the golden embroidered dress

It was at the gala dinner for Vogue UK:100 years that Alexa wore this stunning Prada golden bustier dress. We are not suggesting you wear 40+ denier tights to your wedding, but Alexa looked amazing pairing in the gold+black ensemble.
And with these golden numbers we round up todays dress inspiration – but if you are craving more looks from untraditional real brides, this post is for you!
